If you live near Nine Eagles Drive, you know the signs. Cars lining up. Music drifting over the trees. Families dressed up and laughing on their way into the Bayanihan Arts and Events Center.
The Philippine Cultural Foundation hosts some of the biggest cultural celebrations in the Southeast. PhilFest marked its 30th year this spring and draws 15,000 to 20,000 people. This fall brings the 32nd Sampaguita Ball, a black-tie night themed “Engrande.” Joy, food, dance and community, right in our backyard.
And maybe you drive past and feel nothing. Or you go, and the music is great, the food is great, everyone is having fun, and you’re standing there wondering why you can’t feel it.
When joy goes quiet
There’s a clinical word for this: anhedonia. It means a reduced ability to feel pleasure or interest in things that used to light you up. It can look like:
Going through the motions at events you used to love
Food, music or hobbies tasting “gray”
Feeling disconnected from people you care about
Choosing to stay home because going out feels pointless
Anhedonia is one of the core symptoms of depression. It can also show up with burnout, grief, chronic stress and some medical conditions. It isn’t laziness, and it isn’t ingratitude.
You’re allowed to be happy for everyone else and still not feel it yourself. That gap is worth paying attention to.
Why celebrations can make it worse
Happy events have a way of holding up a mirror. When everyone around you seems full of energy and belonging, the flatness inside can feel louder. Many people respond by pulling away, which makes sense in the moment but usually deepens the loneliness over time.
What you can do this week
Go small. You don’t need to stay for the whole event. Twenty minutes counts.
Bring one person. Having a familiar face makes it easier to stay present.
Notice, don’t judge. Try a quick check-in: “My mood is a 3 today.” Tracking helps you see patterns, and helps your provider if you seek care.
Protect the basics. Sleep, daylight, movement and regular meals won’t cure depression, but they give treatment something to build on.
When to reach out
If you’ve felt flat or down most days for two weeks or longer, or if you’ve lost interest in most of what used to matter to you, please talk with a professional. Depression is very treatable, and you deserve to feel your life again.
If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.
