Telepsychiatry is the most direct way around that gap, and in 2026 it’s fully covered by most major insurance plans.
What telepsychiatry actually is
It’s a full clinical appointment, not general talk therapy, delivered over a secure video platform. A telepsychiatrist (an MD/DO or psychiatric nurse practitioner) can diagnose using clinical standards, prescribe and manage medication, and coordinate with your other providers. A therapist, by contrast, focuses on talk therapy and can’t prescribe. A lot of patients benefit from both together.
Is it legal and safe here?
Yes. Florida regulates telepsychiatry under the same standards as in-person care: providers must be Florida-licensed, sessions must be live two-way video (not email or audio-only), and everything runs on a HIPAA-compliant platform. Providers can legally prescribe controlled substances, including ADHD and anxiety medications, once a proper clinical relationship is established.

Anxiety and panic disorders, depression (including seasonal patterns common here), adult ADHD, which is significantly underdiagnosed, especially in women and high-achieving professionals, work-related burnout, stable bipolar disorder, and PTSD.
Does insurance cover it?
Mostly, yes, thanks to federal parity laws. Most major Florida insurers, including UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Florida Blue, Medicare, Oscar Health, AVMED, and Optum Behavioral Health, cover telepsychiatry at the same rate as in-person visits. Worth confirming your specific plan’s referral and authorization requirements before booking.
No insurance? Self-pay initial evaluations typically run $250–$400, with follow-ups from $150–$250. Many patients find the time saved on travel and missed work makes it a wash even paying out of pocket.
