I hear some version of this almost every week: “I thought everyone struggled this much.” A patient describes forgetting a conversation from an hour ago, walking into a room and blanking on why, or starting a project full of energy only to lose steam before it’s done. Usually they’ve already Googled it: adult ADHD evaluation near me, why can’t I focus at work, why do I forget everything. They’re hoping the answer isn’t just “you need to try harder.”
It rarely is.
It’s not a focus problem. It’s an executive function problem.
Most people picture ADHD as a kid who can’t sit still in class. But plenty of adults I evaluate never fit that picture. They got good grades, weren’t disruptive, and quietly built a whole system of coping strategies: late-night work sessions, ten reminder apps, deadline adrenaline. It worked. Until it didn’t.
The shift usually isn’t that symptoms got worse. It’s that life got heavier (a promotion, a new baby, a move, going back to school), and the coping systems that used to hold everything together started to crack under more weight than they were built for.
What’s actually happening underneath is executive dysfunction: the brain’s planning, prioritizing, and follow-through system running short-staffed. Someone can know exactly what needs to happen and still not be able to consistently make themselves do it. That gap gets mislabeled as laziness constantly, including by the person experiencing it.
Two things that surprise people almost every time
Hyperfocus. ADHD gets framed as “can’t pay attention,” but many adults with it can vanish into something they find genuinely interesting for hours. It’s the opposite tasks, the repetitive, boring, or just unpleasant ones, that feel almost physically impossible to start, no matter how important they are.
Women get missed constantly. Instead of visible hyperactivity, many women learn to mask by over-preparing and perfectionism. A lot of them don’t recognize their own symptoms until a child gets diagnosed and they think, wait, that’s… me.
It’s not about intelligence
This is maybe the most persistent myth I run into. Some of the sharpest, most capable people I’ve evaluated (physicians, attorneys, engineers, business owners) have ADHD. It doesn’t touch intelligence. It touches attention regulation, working memory, and impulse control. A lot of people with ADHD build genuinely impressive problem-solving skills specifically because they’ve had to work around a brain that doesn’t organize things the default way.
Why a real evaluation matters more than an online quiz
ADHD symptoms overlap with anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, thyroid issues, and other conditions that can look similar on the surface. A proper evaluation goes through childhood and work history, sleep, family history, and co-occurring symptoms. It’s not just a checklist, because getting the diagnosis right is what makes the treatment plan actually work.
And no, you’re not “too old.” I’ve diagnosed patients in their twenties, forties, and sixties who spent decades assuming they were just disorganized.
Where I see this most in Westchase and the greater Tampa Bay area
This community moves fast: long commutes on the Expressway, demanding careers, packed school and activity schedules. Even people without ADHD feel stretched thin here. For someone whose brain is already working harder than most to keep up, that pace turns manageable symptoms into daily overwhelm.
A few honest questions
- Do you procrastinate even when you genuinely want to get something done?
- Do you lose track of items constantly despite real effort to stay organized?
- Do unfinished projects quietly pile up?
- Do you only seem to function well right up against a deadline?
If several of these sound familiar and have been true for years, it’s worth a real conversation, not another Google search.
If this sounds like you, or like someone you know in Westchase, Odessa, or the Tampa Bay area, I’d rather you get an actual answer than keep wondering. Book an ADHD evaluation with WellMinded Health. Virtual visits are available across Florida, and in-person visits at our Gunn Hwy office in Odessa.
